Push2Run 2.2 very high CPU usage

Here you are welcome to report any Push2Run bugs you may have encountered

if you know of a workaround, it would be great if you would mention that too

if it were a Windows update causing the problem, terminating P2R wouldn't have any effect. Also, when this happens, the only way to quit P2R is to terminate it from the task manager. Trying to quit the normal way gets ignored.

Once the problem starts, P2R becomes directly responsible for bringing my high end system to a crawl. This is confirmed when terminating it restores performance.

Next time I see this happen, I'll see if I can get any information on what it's doing, before i kill it.

ok - it sounds as if it's going into a loop. Not sure what is triggering this, however, as you have written
I exited the game, opened task manager. Several items were using high CPU. Some of which I closed (Display fusion, explorer, Steam) there were a few other things doing the same, and P2R was one of them
I'd suggest you try ending Push2Run first and see if any of the others continue to show high cpu usage.

Ok happened again, and I was able to get a slightly better look, since the computer was at least somewhat responsive. Opening Task manager, I found P2R, and "Microsoft Compatibility Telemtry" both eating up CPU time. Once I ended P2R, Microsoft Compatibility Telemtry returned to normal. Right now, that's the best I can give you.

ok - well working with that, according to this article you might want to turn off telemetry (using method 1) to see if it makes a difference:

Hi.

Mine also does the very high CPU usage thing. It did it a week or so ago (Edit - after a long idle time), I just closed it and ignored it.

Then it did it again yesterday.

I screenshotted task manager before killing it.

It was gobbling up all the remaining CPU and the mouse was jittery across the screen due to hardly any cpu left.

I killed P2R and it was ok again.

Win 7 x64, all updates - No telemetry crap running and all blocked. Push2Run V2.2

Note - I have 2 other machines running P2R with Win 7 x64 and they have not done this before that I have noticed.

The laptop it does it on stays on for weeks at a time. (if that helps)

Let me know if there's anything I can do if it does it again to try and debug.

Edit - I'm not running any games on it.
I don't use a screen saver on it at all and the screen doesn't go to sleep or go blank - (It's an external monitor I simply switch off).
I do notice at the time it does it that the machine has been left alone for a few hours. (Greater than 4)

Maybe Windows is running some background operation after a long idle time that interferes with P2R (?)
I have an NVME SSD in it only so it isn't an auto defragger.

Edit 2 - I had a look and my machine runs a few tasks at idle - I tried kicking off the ones that are set to run at idle but it had no effect, things ran normally.
If it does it again, I'll check task manager history (which I have now enabled) to see what tasks it ran which might have caused it.
If I find a suspect, I'll set that task to run after a few minutes of idle then leave it and see if I can isolate what is doing it.

That's exactly what happened with me the very first time I noticed it. I've recently rebooted my machine a few different times for updates, and restarted P2R on he last boot, which was less than 24 hours ago. I'll leave it running with telemetry disabled, and make some more observations.

More troubleshooting!

P2R did it again to me today. Went to sleep, and when I returned, it was eating up as much CPU as it could. This is without the telemetry running in the background. In order to make my system responsive, so I could investigate, I manually changed the app's affinity to the last CPU core.

Investigating with Process Explorer, I found that P2R had nearly 400 active threads, most of them looked like the screenshot below. Average number of active threads, when not eating CPU is around 20. Also of note, Memory usage jumps from around 17MB average to a steady 22MB during this CPU issue, and stays there, until terminated.

I just looked at my version thru process explorer and am not seeing anything like that.

clr.dll is part of Microsoft's dot net framework, have your tried to reload that yet?

Here's my Clr.dll details.

*I downloaded and ran that file from the link but it didn't change my clr.dll time stamps.
