Turning On a Computer

Hi, this is my first post. Have just starting using P2R and it is great.

I was looking through the internet looking for a way to start my computer using a voice command from Google and saw a post about using WakeOnLan and this software and a reference to detailed instructions on how to do it on this website. I must be blind as I can't find it anywhere. Can someone point me in the proper direction?

However, as a word of caution to anyone reading this thread ...

If you wish to use Wake On Lan over the internet you will need to set up your destination firewall/router to allow "Subnet Directed Broadcasts". Most routers and firewalls disable this option by default.

You will then need to allow traffic through on your firewall/router on a specific port. The choice of ports is up to you.

A principal limitation of standard broadcast wake-on-LAN is that broadcast packets are generally not routed. This prevents the technique being used in larger networks or over the Internet. Subnet directed broadcasts (SDB)[9][10] may be used to overcome this limitation. SDB may require changes to intermediate router configuration. Subnet directed broadcasts are treated like unicast network packets until processed by the final (local) router. This router then broadcasts the packet using layer 2 broadcast. This technique allows a broadcast to be initiated on a remote network but requires all intervening routers to forward the SDB.[11][12] When preparing a network to forward SDB packets, care must be taken to filter packets so that only desired (e.g. WoL) SDB packets are permitted — otherwise the network may become a participant in DDoS attacks such as the Smurf Attack.

maybe i can add to that. i have a bit of an adventurous solution, albeit it works:

you'll need:
an android device
tasker app (not free)
autovoice app
WOL app
google home app

1 first configure the WOL app to point at your PC
2 then set up a task in tasker to trigger the WOL plugin and wake up your pc
3 you can then set up a profile in tasker where a certain recognized autovoice keyword (e.g. "pcon") will trigger the task in 2
4 to make it more comfy set up a routine in google home and choose a trigger word (e.g. "turn on the pc") to trigger "ask autovoice pcon"
5 profit .)

Yes, I tried something like that along the way but found my phone had to be unlocked to use it. Perhaps there is a way around that?

if you grant tasker the necessary permissions it works w/o any manual input

tasker + google home routines + push2run really allows for some awesome magic to happen
