WOL help

Post by DixonK »

Hey everyone.

Anyone can share some tips on how to do the following?
Start PC from WOL without needing a second computer?
For example with google home. "Hey google, media on" starts my pc and then I could use like "hey google, media netflix" and it will start netflix.

Sends a Pushbullet push to my phone, which triggers Tasker to Wake the PC.
Sends a push to P2R, which starts Netflix.

when I tried to use my cell phone and Tasker I ran into two problems: first, my phone had to be unlocked and second it had to be in range of my Wi-Fi network (so I couldn't trigger it's remotely using Google Assistant). I came up with this as an alternative (but it may not be for everyone):

Oh yikes, yeah I don't think I can go that far I simply lack knowledge to do it.

I might have to live without the WOL then, I wouldnt use it outside of my home but having to have the phone unlocked it defeats the handfree purpose - I could just use an app to start the pc then which is not what I want - I wanted the voice to start and shutdown. this is very unfortunate :( thanks for sharing the link!

Onto the other topic about netflix then, I used the p2r setup and completed it but instead of what was written, I changed it all to "media $" this works fine for shutdown the pc by saying "hey google, media off" or opening the calculator by "hey google, media calc" or calculator.

After this I tried the above with "hey google, media netflix" but it says "action was run but appeared to have failed"
I've added it like
Description: Netflix
Listen for: Netflix
Open: https://www.netflix.com/browse

the rest is blank- any ideas?

What OS are you using, Tyrian81?
I'm a big supporter of lightweight wheelchairs because of their functionality.

For Wake-on-LAN, I use an open-source home automation platform called Home Assistant (Hass.io) and the software is free, the directions are extremely clear and the community support is great. (https://www.home-assistant.io/getting-started/). I've found this to be the most stable voice activated WOL solution and I've tried a handful of methods over the years. It shows the on/off status from a switch on your phone when you're away from home. No IFTTT, Tasker, etc. needed.

It uses a separate always-on PC (ie. $40 Raspberry Pi off Amazon) that requires some setup to get going with Google Home, but well worth it in my opinion.

You'll still need to use Push2Run to turn the PC off (but you can program the Pushbullet notification directly into the HA switch, so IFTTT not needed).
